How to Transfer an IRA Account to Robinhood
• It’s very easy to move an IRA to Robinhood.
• Robinhood does not charge a transfer fee for this move.
• Robinhood has easy-to-use tools on its website and mobile app for online account transfers.
Thanks to Robinhood’s simple digital tools, it’s easy to move an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) from another brokerage firm. To make the move, just follow the steps below.
Getting into Robinhood
Robinhood takes part in the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS). This fully online network is easy to use, and if you follow the steps below, your old IRA can be moved to Robinhood in just a few days.
First Step: The first task is to
open a new brokerage IRA at Robinhood. It must have the same tax type as the old IRA (Roth or Traditional) and the same name on it. An existing IRA at Robinhood can be used as long as these two rules are met. Keep in mind that Robinhood does not offer other IRA types, such as SEP or minor accounts.
To open a Robinhood IRA, go to the website or mobile app and look for the sign-up button. You will need to enter your name and email to get started. During the application, be sure to choose the correct IRA type (Traditional or Roth).
Second Step: While the IRA application is being processed, go to the old brokerage firm and get the IRA ready for the move. Robinhood does not support many asset types that may be held at the old firm. These can include mutual funds, annuities, bonds, closed-end funds, foreign stocks, and most OTC stocks. These positions must be sold, moved to a second IRA at the old firm, or left in the old IRA using a partial transfer. Although Robinhood offers crypto trading, digital currencies cannot be held in a Robinhood IRA and cannot be moved through the ACATS system.
Third Step: The Robinhood IRA should also be set up correctly. This means adding options trading if you have any contracts coming over (contracts that expire in less than a week should not be moved).
Fourth Step: With both IRAs ready, it’s time to request the ACATS transfer. This is done on the Robinhood side. Log into the website and click on the Account link in the upper-right corner. In the drop-down menu, select Transfers.
On the next page, click the link to transfer an outside brokerage account to Robinhood. It can be either a brokerage or managed account, as long as all the rules above are followed. Follow the on-screen steps and enter all required details. In some cases, the form may ask for login details for the other firm. If you prefer, you can close that window and enter the account number instead. In either case, complete the steps and submit the request at the end.
You can also submit an ACATS transfer request using Robinhood’s mobile app. Tap the person icon in the lower-right corner of the bottom menu and scroll down on the settings page to find the button to transfer accounts in. This will open the same ACATS form.
Fifth Step: Robinhood
matches IRA transfers with a 1% bonus. After the transfer is finished, log in and check your transaction history to make sure you receive the 1% match. Gold customers also get a 3% match on contributions.
If you have any questions or need help, go back to the settings page in the app and tap the three horizontal lines in the upper-left corner. Scroll down to find the link to contact customer support.
Robinhood Promotion
Free stock up to $200 and 3% match when you open an account.
Transfer Cost
Robinhood does not charge any fee for incoming transfers. It will refund another firm’s outgoing ACATS fee, up to $75, if the transfer amount is at least $7,500.
How Long Does an ACAT Transfer Take?
Moving an IRA from one brokerage firm to another usually takes about 5 to 9 business days if everything goes smoothly (that is, if there are no mistakes in the online forms).
Robinhood’s Retirement Recommendations
Whether a brokerage or managed IRA is moved to Robinhood, it will become a brokerage IRA after it arrives. Robinhood does not offer advisory services or full financial planning. It does provide one-time investment suggestions for IRAs. Robinhood notes that this program is not investment advice. To view these suggestions, click on the Retirement tab at the top of the website and select Find Investments.
