How to Transfer from Acorns to Robinhood
If you want to move from Acorns’ robo-style investing setup to self-directed trading at Robinhood, you can move the ETFs in the Acorns account to Robinhood by following these steps:
Step One:
Go to Robinhood and open a new account if you do not already have one. An account you already have can also be used. Although Acorns offers SEP IRA accounts, Robinhood does not offer SEP IRAs. If this is going to be an IRA-to-IRA transfer, make sure the account names and account types match exactly, such as Roth to Roth.
Step Two: After the Robinhood account has been opened, the next step is to ask for a non-ACATS transfer. Since this is the only account-transfer method Acorns offers, it is the method that must be used in this situation. The non-ACATS transfer request must be started with the receiving brokerage firm, which in this case is Robinhood.
To reach Robinhood from its website, select the Account link in the upper-right corner and then
choose the “Contact us 24/7” link on the following page. Follow the prompts on the screen to begin a chat session or request a call back.
In the mobile app, tap the head-and-shoulders icon in the bottom menu. Then tap the main-menu icon, which is shown as three horizontal lines, in the upper-left corner. On the following page, scroll down to the support link and follow the prompts to contact customer service.
No matter which method you use, you’ll need to ask for a non-ACATS transfer from your Acorns account. Keep your Acorns account number ready because Robinhood will need it.

Step Three: After Robinhood receives the request and the account number, it will start preparing the digital paperwork. Once that process is complete, Acorns will send the paperwork to you. You will need to print the documents and obtain a medallion signature guarantee. This is a special stamp that can usually be obtained from a local bank or another financial institution. In some cases, there may be a fee for it.
Step Four: After the medallion signature guarantee has been added, the completed paperwork must be sent to Acorns. There are two ways to do this: by email or by regular mail. Acorns’ email address is help@acornssecurities.com. Its mailing address is:
Acorns Securities, LLC
ATTN: Account Transfers
5300 California Ave, Bldg 1
Irvine CA 92617
Step Five: Once Acorns receives all required paperwork in good order, it will send an email to the account holder at the email address on file. You must reply to that email. If Acorns does not receive a response, it will not continue with the transfer. If it does receive a reply, it will send whole shares, but not fractional shares, of the account’s holdings to Robinhood. Fractional shares will be sold for cash, and the cash will be sent to the checking account linked to the Acorns account.
Remember that once the whole shares arrive in the Robinhood account, they will no longer be managed by Acorns or by another advisor. Since assets at Robinhood are self-managed, it will be your responsibility as the account owner to decide what to trade and when to trade from that point forward.
If the non-ACATS transfer process seems too complicated, another option is to sell all positions at Acorns and move the cash to Robinhood through the ACH network.
How Long Does a Transfer Take?
A non-ACATS transfer should take at least a few weeks because of the paperwork and manual steps involved. The second method, which involves moving cash, may take roughly the same amount of time because of trade settlement and ACH processing time frames.
