M1 Finance Cryptocurrencies
M1 Finance is a broker that takes a slightly different approach than its competitors. Focused on long-term investing, M1 Finance makes portfolio diversification easy with its ‘pie’ building tool. The broker uses the same feature for cryptocurrency investing, and it’s a feature well worth learning more about.
How Does Crypto Investing Work at M1 Finance?
M1’s approach to investing is all about long-term goals and wealth building. The broker encourages investors to consider a balanced and diversified investment strategy.
The broker’s belief that a conservative approach is better for long-term success is how the ‘Pies’ concept was created.
Pies
M1 Finance Pies are automated investment tools that allow users to decide how much of their portfolio should be dedicated to particular investments.
M1 Finance customers can choose the asset classes they want to include in their portfolio and then decide on a percentage for each. It is also possible to create multiple Pies with differing strategies, each with its own predetermined weighting within the account.
There are several ways to create crypto Pies at M1. One is to select your own digital assets and decide on a weighting for each. Another is to use one of M1’s Pies. The broker is even introducing something called ‘Expert Pies,’ which focuses on unique aspects and strategies of the crypto investment space. Expert Pie options include Web3, DeFi, large-cap, and more.

Automated Investment Tools
Once your Pies are created, crypto investing at M1 Finance can be automated. Auto-invest follows your Pie Slice allocation instructions and buys into underweight slices each time you make a deposit.
To activate auto-invest on your account, navigate to the accounts tab on mobile or the available balance on the web interface. From there, toggle the auto-invest feature on or off.
On-Demand Crypto Trading
On-demand crypto trading is also available at M1. However, it is somewhat limited and is only available for M1 Plus members.
Since M1 discourages ‘active trading,’ they only allow investors to make up to ten monthly on-demand trades. While it is pretty helpful to be able to rebalance your portfolio in response to market events, it is good not to think of M1’s on-demand trading as ‘trading.’ It’s essentially an opportunity for portfolio management.
Digital Asset Availability
Crypto investing at M1 Finance is relatively new. Because of that, the availability of digital assets is on the low side. Still, the list does a good job of covering the bulk of the cryptocurrency markets.
Here are the cryptocurrencies that are currently available.
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- Ethereum (ETH)
- Cardano (ADA)
- Polygon (MATIC)
- Litecoin (LTC)
- Solana (SOL)
- Avalanche (AVAX)
- Chainlink (LINK)
- Cosmos Hub (ATOM)
- Algorand (ALGO)
Clearing House
The clearing house for M1 Finance Crypto is Apex Crypto. Apex Crypto is responsible for much of the brokerage industry’s cryptocurrency market access and provides traders with a secure way to invest in digital assets.
There are a few things to note when using Apex Crypto as your entry point into the world of cryptocurrencies.
One is that Apex is a custodian that holds your cryptocurrencies for you. When you buy crypto, it is stored using a combination of hot and cold storage.
Because of that, you cannot transfer crypto in and out of your Pies from crypto wallets you own or from other crypto exchanges.
Another thing to note is that Apex is considered one of the most secure cryptocurrency providers. And, while it’s still true that FDIC or SIPC does not protect cryptocurrencies, Apex has some protections built in that give investors some peace of mind.
M1 Crypto Fees and Commissions
M1 Finance doesn’t charge any commissions on trading, but some fees are involved with cryptocurrency trading.
One is that if you want to take advantage of the on-demand trading service, you’ll need to subscribe to M1 Plus. The fee for M1 Plus is $95 per year.
Besides the M1 Plus fee, a 100-basis point (1%) fee is applied to every sale and purchase of cryptocurrencies. That means you’ll pay $1 for every $100 investment in cryptocurrencies.
