Merrill Edge does not charge setup or annual fees for its brokerage accounts.
There is no inactivity fee and no initial deposit required to open an account either.
Merrill Edge clearly lists all account fees and commissions on its website. Account holders can expect
very few hidden fees from the brokerage house.
One annoying charge is the $49.95 fee to close a Merrill Edge IRA account.
This is an area where Merrill Edge is more expensive than, for instance,
Charles Schwab, which is one of the best IRA providers
among major brokerage firms.
At Merrill Edge, stocks and ETFs, mutual fund, fixed income, and bond screeners are available to help simplify the process of
selecting assets. Nearly 4,000 mutual funds, and 4,213 bonds are available through the broker.
However, this selection is not even close to number of funds offered through TD Ameritrade (13,000).
Account holders with over $20,000 in balance qualify for the Merrill Edge Select® Portfolios for a flat 1% annual fee.
The optional service is designed to provide professional investment guidance in building and maintaining
portfolio according to clients' needs and investment goals.

Merrill Edge's trading tools are mediocre compared to the strongest competitors. Beginners and less active investors will find
broker's web-based platform easy to use. The advanced trading platform is available to active traders.
Merrill Edge performs well when it comes to investments research. It offers research amenities from Morningstar, S&P Capital IQ and
Recognia along with BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research. It is still fewer research providers than at some competitors - there are
13 sources at Fidelity Investments and TD Ameritrade.
