TD Ameritrade ACAT Transfer Strategy
ACAT transferring brokerage accounts is quite simple and your new brokerage will gladly help you every step along the way. However, there are some things
to keep in mind before starting the transfer process. ACAT transferring your account will not result in a taxable event. If your funds are currently trading
below their cost basis, it is better to liquidate the account and report the loss on your taxes (assuming your funds are in a taxable account).
Once
liquidated, you can then simply close the account and open a new account at the brokerage of your choosing and take full advantage of their current
promotions: Earn up to $4,000 cash bonus and $200 transfer fee rebate.
If your funds have surpassed their cost basis, then it is a better idea to defer taxes and ACAT transfer the account. During the transfer, your funds will
continue to be invested in-kind, so you will not lose out on any potential gains. If your old brokerage offered commission free trades on some unique
ETFs, you may not be able to continue making commission free trades on these ETFs with your new broker. While most large brokerages offer popular index
fund ETFs commission free, each brokerage is slightly different in what they offer. Always check to see what options you have for free prior to moving
your funds to a new brokerage.
Another thing to note is that you should not trade after initiating an ACAT account transfer. This can cause delays and
complicates the process.
Most ACAT account transfers take around a week or two to complete.
TD Ameritrade Fees
If you use TD Ameritrade's automated phone system, the fee goes from $0 to $5. But, at $25, the fee really explodes for broker-assisted trades.
If they fill an order in separate lots over two or more days, you’ll get charged for each lot. So you may want to specify all-or-none trades when dealing
with TD Ameritrade.
Bonds trades cost a flat fee of $25, futures are
$2.25 per contract and FOREX commissions depend upon the currency pair.
Mutual funds at TD Ameritrade not in NTF (no commission) program will cost a customer $49.99 to buy, and $0 to sell. This is also the amount you’ll hand
over if you sell an NTF fund within 180 days.
