Capital One Investing IRA Overview

Capital One Investing, formerly known as a ShareBuilder, has been around since 1999 and it has been through two acquisitions in the past ten years – first purchased by ING in 2007 and then by Capital One in 2012. To its credit, it has gone through the transitions quite seamlessly.

Opening an IRA can be a daunting task. There are numerous advantages to having an IRA but the complexity and costs sometimes prevent people from diving in and opening their own. Capital One Investing IRA is a service that was specifically designed to address both of those issues by offering a simplified IRA coupled with low cost. Clients can select between 100% no load mutual funds, ETFs, stocks, and bond funds in their quest to build their retirement nest egg.

Portfoliobuilder Is A Unique Offering With Distinct Benefits

Capital One IRA Review: Portfolio Builder

Capital One Investing offers an almost unique feature that only one other discount broker offers right now. It's called Portfoliobuilder and it allows clients to quickly, cheaply and in a smart way invest their money.

Using Portfoliobuilder can be a strong choice for those who are looking for the most 'bang for the buck.' This service costs a flat $18.95 each time user invests in a portfolio of six to eight ETFs. Portfoliobuilder is designed the same way many 401k programs are. Using the power of asset allocation and diversification investors can build a portfolio that is in alignment with their long-term investment goals.

For investors who want a 'set it and forget it' model Portfoliobuilder is the obvious choice. Using this service eliminates the need to do a lot of research. User will not have to become an expert stock picker or an active trader using this strategy.

Capital One Investing IRA Review

Capital One Investing offers the standard services customers should expect from an online brokerage: a variety of investment products ranging from stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETF), mutual funds, bond funds, options, and even initial public offerings (IPO). The firm provides tax-deferred and individual accounts as well as good research tools for individuals looking to investigate stocks, mutual funds and ETF’s before making trades. The site does not offer additional services, such as personal investment advice or financial planning. It does, however, provide a slew of educational tools and resources, which we find preferable to the sales pitches of in-person consultations.

For the retirement account holders the Retire MyWay tool helps users with calculations on saving for retirement through the IRA. This tool doesn't have mind-blowing content, but will fulfill the expectation from the service provider for basic investor education.

An IRA with Capital One Investing is relatively low cost but users still need to be aware of the fees. There's no maintenance fee on the accounts but individual transactions carry costs. Real-time online trades cost $6.95 (about average for online brokerages) and automatic investing (where small investments are made on client's behalf each month) costs $3.95 per investment. Customers can invest in a portfolio of no-load mutual funds at a cost of $0. If one is looking for a 'gotcha' for this, here it is: although these funds have no transaction cost they generally make up for it with a higher expense ratio than at Fidelity, Vanguard or similar vendors. Still, the lack of a transaction fee means users can begin saving quickly at a low cost. One of the nice things about Capital One Investing’s accounts is that there are no account minimums.

Capital One Investing provides retirement and banking choices if clients want to create a central location to keep their money. For retirement there are traditional and Roth individual retirement account options and, for small businesses, there are four different 401(k) plans to take advantage of to offer to employees.

The Good

  • No account minimums
  • Easy setup, good service
  • Easy to understand resources for research and planning
  • Banking services offered through Capital One
  • Portfoliobuilder tool

The Bad

  • Behind the competitors in trading tools
  • Behind the competitors in investment choices
  • $49.95 fee on any no-load, no-transaction fee mutual fund held less than 90 days

Capital One Investing’s low barrier to entry with no minimum balances makes it a good place for beginning investors getting started with an IRA. But in an extremely competitive industry of online investing there are companies (such as TD Ameritrade or Ally Invest) that offer all that plus many more additional and advanced features.
